Osaka: The Castle, Kuromon Market and Dōtonbori

Osaka does not do restraint. This walk runs from the castle that helped unify sixteenth-century Japan down to the canal where the city advertises itself in ten-metre signboards, and it is built around eating: the market at Kuromon in the morning, deep-fried skewers in Shinsekai in the afternoon, whatever Dōtonbori puts in front of you at night.

It is easy walking, roughly 7 km in total, all of it flat and paved. The legs between districts are long, though, and most locals would ride them — the Midōsuji subway line is Osaka’s main artery and shadows most of this route, so drop underground whenever your feet have had enough.

Getting there. Start at Osakajōkōen or Tanimachi 4-chōme station for the castle. The walk ends in Namba, one of the city’s two great transport hubs, so getting home is easy from wherever you stop.

Permits & tickets. No permit needed. Osaka Castle Park is free to enter and the castle tower charges admission. Tsūtenkaku’s observation deck is ticketed. Kuromon, Shinsekai, Dōtonbori and Hōzen-ji Yokochō cost nothing to walk.

Good to know:

Kuromon is a working market — best in the morning, and quieter on weekdays.
Dōtonbori is at its best after dark, when the signs are lit and reflecting off the canal.
Summer here is genuinely hot and sticky, and June is the rainy season; spring and autumn are far kinder to a walking day.

Park paths and castle steps

One of Japan's most famous landmarks, in Chūō ward, and a major player in the unification of the country during the sixteenth-century Azuchi–Momoyama period. The tower you climb is a ferroconcrete reconstruction; inside it works as a museum, with cases of artifacts relating to the original structure. Allow about an hour and a half.

Circle out through the park that surrounds the keep, past broad moats and the enormous cut stones of the walls. It is one of the city's best-loved cherry-blossom grounds, and free to walk at any hour.

City streets and covered arcade

A long covered market street near Nipponbashi, and the reason Osaka is nicknamed the nation's kitchen. Stalls sell fresh fish, produce and local specialities, and many will grill or slice what you buy and hand it over on the spot. Come hungry; come in the morning.

City streets

A neighbourhood laid out in 1912 with New York as the model for its southern half and Paris for its northern, built around a Luna Park that closed in 1923. The steel Tsūtenkaku tower still stands at its centre — about 108 metres tall, with an observation deck at 91 metres. The streets below are the home of kushikatsu, battered and deep-fried skewers of more or less anything.

Canal-side streets

The district runs along the Dōtonbori canal through Namba, in Chūō ward. Historically a theatre quarter, it is now the city's loudest nightlife strip, defined by huge illuminated signboards — a mechanical crab, a blowfish, and the Glico running man, who has been sprinting over the canal since the 1930s. Best after dark.

Flagstone alley

Duck one street back from the noise into a narrow lantern-lit alley of flagstones and small restaurants. At its heart is Hōzen-ji, a Jōdo-shū temple, and its Mizukake Fudō statue — so thoroughly furred with moss from generations of visitors ladling water over it that the figure has all but disappeared.
